Monitor Collection Associated Records, 1829-2008.

The Associated Records of the Monitor Collection comprise textual and audiovisual records collected by the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, its predecessor organizations and contract employees. Among the records are also the personal papers of Edward M. Miller, Joseph W. Norcross, Capt. Ernest W. Peterkin, Jerry Lee Harlowe and Rod Farb, which were donated to NOAA. The documents record the research into the design, building, service, loss, re-discovery and recovery of US Steamer Monitor (Ironclad : 1862). They also contain the project files, subject files and working files of the Monitor Project generated by the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. The records were placed on deposit with The Mariners' Museum by a Memorandum of Agreement in July 1987 that also designated the Museum as principal museum for the Monitor Collection. The Monitor Collection includes the artifacts recovered from the wreck of Monitor during expeditions beginning in 1973, as well as 3-D objects relating to the expeditions and to the public interest in ironclads from the mid-19th century to the present.
